MT. HIBOK-HIBOK: the highest point in the island province of Camiguin

Mt. Hibok-hibok is a stratovolcano on the mystical island of Camiguin. Mt. Hibok-hibok (also known as Catarman volcano) stands 1,300 meters above sea level. Its beauty is mostly visible from afar, especially in Misamis Oriental (Cagayan de Oro) and nearby provinces of Northern Mindanao.

Mount Hibok-hibok

It is an active volcano in the country and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mt. Hibok-hibok is still active, but there is no evidence of activity. The only signs of activities are the hot springs at the bottom of its mountains. Contrary to its twin peak, the tallest, Mount Timpoong (1,400masl) where has activity records and has caused losses of lives in its history.

Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-hibok natural monument is an ASEAN heritage park since 2016. Unauthorized activities inside the park are strictly prohibited.

HikingClimbing up to crater lake is pretty grueling. The trail is a gradual uphill approach but established, and it's covered by forest. Campgrounds for campers are located alongside its crater lake. Where most hikers camp overnight.

Tropical forest. The hiking may be exhausting, but the forest-covered trail may ease the tiredness. Dense mossy rainforest, ubiquitous leech, and other wildlife can be encountered along the path. In my own experience, I was sucked by a leech, and other hikers witnessed mice strolling everywhere.

Hibok-hibok peak. From its campsite, an hour's trek to attain the summit. But along the trail, a view deck of its crater lake can be seen atop.

The most famous crater lake of Hibok-hibok.

Summit. Astonishing awaits at the summit;  overlooking the greenery Camiguin, white island, a glimpse of Bohol, and the massive island of Mindanao as well.

Stunning backdrop sceneries behold us. After a tiring trek without adequate sleep, Yet, the reward was worthwhile, a reason to trek for more. 😊

After the summit, we trailed back to the campsite to pack things and leave. Backtrail via Yumbing trail.

Thankful to GFCI - the 2nd Annual Friendship Climb is - a well-organized and hassle-free event. I was fortunate to climb along with hikers from Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon and to La Familia de Laagan my group.
